The food. The drinks. The events. The patio. Flair sizzles at Maya del Sol, the Latin fusion restaurant in the old Vivaldi space on Oak Park Avenue.

The food — dishes rooted in the Yucatan, Cuba, El Salvador, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Argentina — comes from Ruben Beltran, an executive chef who is a Rick Bayless alum. Maya’s chefs playfully work such specialty extras as yucca, jicama, plantains and coconut milk into choices on dinner and brunch menus that are meant to be welcoming for everyone.

Meat lovers not game enough for Cuban beef stew atop a Colombian corn cake, yucca fries on the side, have the option of a Kobe beef cheeseburger with french fries and just a hint of Latin flavor in a smoky chipotle mayonnaise dressing. Vegetarians can indulge in the Ecuadorian favorite of Calabaza Rellena: a whole acorn squash open and stuffed with a corn-sauce mix of arborio rice, wild mushrooms, yucca and asparagus along with various gluten free and dairy free items.

Drinks at Maya del Sol rival the food in innovative splashes of Central America and South America. Over-the-top cocktail garnishes can include a pickle, a cube of ham or a shrimp. Rims aren’t just sugar or salt; they’re cinnamon sugar or chili salt. Along with margaritas named for Mayan gods and mojitos named for Maya barkeeps are such Latin requisites as caipirinha, the Brazilian standard, and Pisco sour, a fave in Peru and Chile.

Lesser-known Latin drinks also stir up spice at Maya’s two bars. Mangaso is a tequila, rum and mango-puree translation of the dried chili-seasoned mango strips sold by street vendors throughout Latin America. Friday nights after 5:30 p.m., bartenders share their experiments with drinkers and diners alike. Their wit is above question. This is the team that for Election Day came up with the Red Maverick and the Obama Samba.

Events at Maya reflect a sense of fun and nods to the times. Every Friday afternoon, from 4 to 7 p.m., teachers get a 20 percent break on their tab. On one summer evening last year, you could take a class called How to Make the Perfect Margarita. On tax day this year, the dinner tab was Pay What You Think Is Fair.

On the patio, Maya’s biggest channeling of points south, a gas-burning firepit anchors a dining area that has a fully stocked 17-stool bar and table seating for 140. In this part of the restaurant, servers check on you for more than food and drink. If you report so much as a chill, you’ve got your choice of having your chair moved up to the firepit, being brought a blanket, or both. Specialty dining, indeed.

Comment: I too was at the Cinco de Maya celebration, and witnessed Ginny's actual actions from a few tables away. Their party was actually only 2/5 for at least 45 minutes , then two more showed up. Most restaurants will not seat any incomplete party, much less on what was becoming a very busy night. It was them who were being loud and obnoxious, ruining mine and my wife's experience, and I'm glad he asked them to leave (there wasn't any yelling except for her throwing a fit).

Comment: I went to the Cinco de Maya celebration early so that my friends and I could have a good patio spot for dinner. After being pestered to move to the bar several times because only four out of five of our party was sitting at the table (even though we were buying drinks and were waiting on the fifth person to order food), we were yelled at BY THE OWNER and forced to leave. I have never been treated so rudely in my entire life, much less by the owner of a restaurant of which I was a regular patron.

Comment: It started out so good that I told everyone about it. However, the last two times were so disappointing that I won't be back until they make a change.

Comment: I've eaten here about 10 times since it opoened a couple of years ago. I and my guests have always enjoyed the food and atmosphere - from the patio to the bar area to the dining area. The food is a little expensive but the restaurant is a higher end restaurant. I will go back again and again. Just remember to make reservations!

Comment: Way overpriced for the quality of food you get. The food is bland-ok. I have a few times for parties and the last time my husband and I went we got up and walked out after looking at their small and expensive menu. In this economy they need to lower their prices and knock our socks off with great dishes if they want more business. Too bad, so sad..cuz it is a cute restaurant.

Comment: On some days the food is great, on others it's so-so. We always love the band Guitarra Azul that plays on the Fridays, though---they're always excellent and reliably lend an exciting atmosphere to the place. We love live music, and this is the best place to get that and good food in Oak Park. The patio is also a favorite and a great place to bring people visiting OP.

Comment: Something has gone terribly wrong at Maya del Sol. In the beginning I was really excited about this restaurant and the mojitos were great and the food fresh. The last time I went, I was sure the restaurant had changed owners (not so). My appetizer of Beef Nachos was so overly sweet that it ruined my appetite for dinner, the Brazilian Fish Tacos had a very funny aftertaste and were not at all enjoyable and uneatable, the ceviche completely bland. The mojitos resembled sugar water.

Comment: I really like Maya and think it is the best place in Oak Park to take visitors when they are in town. I am always pleased that they have dishes from all over South America. The food is reasonably priced and the drinks are good. We recently brought my wife's Aunt and Uncle, who are from Paris, here. We all had a great time and enjoyed the food.

Comment: When Maya del Sol first opened it was quite refreshing; interesting flavors and style. Something has gone wrong: when we ate there tonight everything was bland and overpriced. Even the Margaritas, which were advertised as being "different" and "bold" were weak (hardly any tequila!) and dull. On top of everything else, the service was rushed.I would give the place two stars if it weren't so overpriced. As it is, Maya del Sol is a huge disappointment, and we won't be returning.

Comment: Maya is a hip and and inviting restaurant. It is casual and elegant, they also feature live entertainment and do not charge a drink minimum! The cuisine is very tasteful and inventive without going overboard. Great place to bring friends to meet Anan, the always welcoming owner. Keep up the great service and food. Thank you.

Comment: I keep rooting for Maya because it's such a cool place, but my last three experiences haven't been satisfying. It was hard to share the ceviche as it wasn't really chopped. I highly recommend the Nachos Del Sol, but the other entrees aren't as inventive and exciting.

Comment: Maya's knows what it's doing! A fun place, with a Chicago feeling. Great Mojitos! I had a pork dish that was fantastic.
